4 Things to Do If You Happen to Be Stuck at an Airport

Many of us have had the unfortunate experience of having to spend endless hours in an unknown airport while waiting to board our next flight. This can happen from time to time, especially to international passengers who have to make connections from one place to another. Other times, bad weather can actually cancel the flight that we were ready for, and we find ourselves having to wait extra hours, or even until the next day, before the weather clears and the appropriate connection can be made. Nobody expects to spend their time at an airport for months, like Tom Hanks’ character in “The Terminal.” But even several hours can seem like an eternity, and people tend to get a little stir crazy. Here are some suggestions to help you pass the time.

Stay Connected

Even if you are not a businessperson, chances are you have a smartphone, laptop, or tablet with you. As you may be in a foreign country, you may not have access to the local cellular signal. But most airports offer either free or extremely inexpensive Wi-Fi, which allows you to connect fairly easily. Any information booth at the airport can give you all the details you need to be up and running in short order. From there, you can check your emails, write a proposal, or even catch the latest news on Facebook. Busily engaged with your electronic device, the hours can begin to melt away. Before you know it, they are calling your flight.

Get Some Gifts

Airport stands specialize in selling either local specialty foods or souvenirs, which can range from a simple T-shirt to a local product. Knowing that potential customers will have to carry them on board, they tend to be small and can be easily stuffed in a carry-on bag. While some might consider them to be overpriced, they typically do not cost a small fortune and can make for some unusual presents upon your return home. If you or anyone else amongst your family and friends like a particular type of alcoholic beverage, you can check out the duty-free shop (if they have one). Sometimes, a strange and unusual local liqueur is available, which also makes for a unique experience back at home.

Grab a Bite

Most countries have some delicious local specialties, and airports typically have at least one restaurant that serves them. Rather than going for the typical hamburger or fish and chips, try to be a little adventurous and try one of the local delicacies. Chances are, you won’t be disappointed. It also wouldn’t hurt to try one of the local beverages to wash it all down with. And let’s face it: Chances are, whatever you have at the terminal is going to be far superior to what they will be offering you on the next flight.

Give Yourself a Break

If you find that your wait is going to be interminable, you might be better off just calling it a day and checking into a hotel near the airport. You can then enjoy an evening off, cozy in your own individual room, with a chance to enjoy all the amenities that the hotel offers. If you happen to be at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, Johannesburg Airport Hotels are practically within walking distance. Sometimes, it’s good to leave the hustle and bustle behind and give yourself a break.
